The Problem of Intimacy: Trade Unions and Labour Governments

Tuesday 23 January 2007, Houses of Parliament, Westminster

This seminar looked at the changing relationships between the trade union movement and post-war Labour governments, examining the lessons from history.

Nina Fishman (University of Westminster) presented her thoughts from a forthcoming book on post-war British trade unions:

Nina disagrees with the nostalgic view of the period 1968-1974 that has begun to hold sway with union thinking today - that many trade unionists now believe that if the current Labour government would only reppeal anti-trade union laws, union strength and numbers would return to the level of the 60s and 70s.

Download Nina's full paper here. Download the summary here. NB: The paper and its summary are Nina's first thoughts on this important subject. She would be pleased to hear from you with any comments. Please do not quote from the paper or summary without her prior permission. Email fishman@westminster.ac.uk

Geoffrey Goodman and John Cole responded to Nina Fishman's paper. A summary of their comments will appear here shortly.
